Yes — 50mm of rain in a single day is a lot for the UK. It means 50 litres of water landing on every square metre of ground, and most of lowland Britain only sees a daily total like that a handful of times a decade. But the honest answer depends entirely on the window of time the rain falls in, so it is worth taking 30mm, 40mm and 50mm in turn.
1mm of rain = 1 litre per square metre. So 50mm of rain is 50 litres on every square metre — five full buckets of water on every metre of your street, roof and garden. Over a typical house roof that is about 2.5 tonnes of water.
The time window is everything
A rainfall total on its own tells you very little; what matters is how quickly it arrives. The same 50mm means completely different things across different windows:
- 50mm across a week — a wet British week. Roughly what the wetter half of the country expects in a soggy autumn fortnight. Nobody notices.
- 50mm in 24 hours — exceptional for most of England. This is named-storm territory, the kind of total that comes with amber warnings and flooding somewhere in the affected region.
- 50mm in 2–3 hours — a serious flash-flooding event. Drains are overwhelmed almost immediately, roads turn into channels, and surface water flooding hits places nowhere near a river.

Is 30mm of rain a lot?
30mm in a day is a very wet day — the sort of total a slow-moving front or an autumn storm delivers. It is not rare, but it is well beyond routine rain: for much of lowland England it might happen a few times a year. Falling on dry summer ground, 30mm mostly soaks in. Falling on saturated winter ground, it can be enough to push responsive rivers towards alert levels, because saturated ground absorbs almost nothing.
Is 40mm of rain a lot?
40mm in a day sits in the gap between "very wet" and "exceptional". Totals like this usually arrive with named storms or intense summer thunderstorms, and they are frequently the point at which the Environment Agency starts issuing flood alerts for faster-responding catchments. 40mm in an hour or two — which thunderstorms can manage — is a genuine emergency for urban drainage, which is typically designed for far less.
Is 50mm of rain a lot?
For almost everywhere in the UK, yes. Context makes the point:
- Much of lowland England receives 600–900mm in an entire year — so 50mm in a day is getting on for a month's rain at once.
- The Met Office's criteria for extreme rainfall events in England start around this range for a single day.
- The UK's wettest places — the Lake District, Snowdonia, the western Highlands — see 50mm days more often, and their rivers and valleys are shaped by it. What is exceptional in Essex is merely notable in Borrowdale.
When forecasts mention 50mm or more, flooding stops being hypothetical: the question becomes where, not whether. That is when it is worth checking live flood warnings and what nearby rain gauges are actually recording rather than watching the sky.
What about 100mm?
100mm in a day is a genuinely extreme event for the UK — the territory of Storm Desmond (which set the UK 24-hour record of 341.4mm at Honister Pass in December 2015) and the great named floods. Events at this scale overwhelm defences, close transport networks and produce severe flood warnings. They are rare, but climate projections expect intense rainfall to become more common, which is why totals that once sounded absurd keep appearing in forecasts.
A quick rule of thumb for reading any forecast total: divide by the hours it falls in. Anything much above 10mm per hour will cause surface water problems in a town; anything above 20–25mm per hour will cause them almost anywhere.
